The Dhimze script, also called the Avpeji, is an alphasyllabic writing system used throughout the majority or northern Yazland and the current and former colonies of several Yasgan nations.
History
The modern Dhimze script, known as avpeji (ávpejhi, after the first letters of the alphabet), is a descendant of the 17th century CY Msulidme script, which was used to write the Classical Dhimze language. Msulidme (msylidme "chisel letters") is still sometimes used as a decorative script, used for titles and the first letters of chapters. It was derived from the Doccábh script and used throughout the Classical Period. The oldest discovered Msulidme inscription dates from the 17th century CY, forming the basis of the Classical Dhimze corpus. It is an alphabet with 26 distinct letters.
Letters
Vowels
Vowels are written as diacritics over consonant letters. One exception is á, which is used in Dhimze and Gharzi as an independent letter. The letter diacritics are:
| Letter diacritic with a |
IPA | Romanization | Letter diacritic with a |
IPA | Romanization | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| a1 | [a], [ɑ] | a, å | æ | [a:], [ɑ:] | aa, åå, ǽ, á | |
| y | [u], [y] | u, ü, y | ý | [u:], [y:] | uu, üü, ý | |
| e | [e], [o] | e, o | é | [e:], [o:] | ee, é, ó | |
| i | [i], [ɯ], [u] | i, y, u | í | [i:], [ɯ:], [u:] | ii, yy, í, ú | |
| o | [o], [ø] | o, ö, ø | ó | [o:], [ø:] | oo, öö, ǿ | |
| u2 | [i], [u] | i, u | ||||
- Not used in Dhimze and Gharzi; see above.
- Only used in Rirsheic.
Due to the vowel harmony rules in the Tschintieric languages, the same diacritics are used for rounded and unrounded vowel counterparts, with rounding determined largely by context alone.
